This is the embellishing machine that everyone is talking about.

This amazing embellisher has opened up a host of creative opportunities for those who love to create original designs with new techniques. The Janome FM725 works without thread, bobbin or tensions and has the same basic shape as a conventional machine but that is were the similarity ends. It has five barbed needles all joined into one single unit. On the side of each needle are tiny barbs, just like little hooks.

These needles travel down through the layers of fabric and decorative yarns and as they penetrate they pull fibres from the top layers and push them down through the base fabric, meshing them together.

The fibres mingle to create new colour and texture combinations that simply cannot be achieved with embroidery, applique or any other kind of needle work. In needle felting there is no "right side" or "wrong side". Whether you push the fibres through from the front or the back depends on the effect you are trying to achieve. By simply moving the layers under the needles you can quickly create beautiful surface embellishment and every design will be unique. You can work with a multitude of fabrics such as wool, felt, wool roving, yarn, ribbon, silk, cotton and more.

The best results when felting come from soft fibrous materials like wool but experimenting with all types of fabrics and yarns will bring out some very interesting results. So what to use?

Yarn: This is where your left over balls of wool will come in very handy. Yarn is ideal for felting because it creates such a soft edge and its colours blend in beautifully. Try using natural fibres or some of the many novelty wools available today especially on wool felt.

Fabric Scraps: Turn ordinary fabric scraps into new colours and combinations. Fabrics such as wool, silk, cotton, dupion silk, or butter muslin. The Xpression will work with almost any weight or multiple layers.

Roving: Roving is un-spun wool or silk. It felts beautifully and creates very soft edged effects that are different on each side of your felted base fabric.

Ribbon, Organza, lace: All of these will interweave with other fabrics to create brand new characteristics.

Other Textiles: Experiment with them all and be amazed at what you can produce.

In fact, with proper layering you can felt almost anything. What was once scraps in your sewing box, become creative expressions. Experimentation is part of the fun of embellishing. Once you have produced your new felted fabric you can then make with it whatever you like, beautiful bags or other fashion accessories, table runners, cushions, why not try a casual jacket or waistcoat or even a beautiful wall hanging?
